Jung popularized understanding human consciousness as a dynamic and transformative process to achieve wholeness or individuation.
- Core Principles of the synthesis:
Individuation as transformation: Jungian psychology posits that individuation – the process of becoming ones true, whole self – parallels the alchemical quest to turn base metal (unrefined ego) into gold (the self).
The tree of Psyche: The kabbalistic Tree of Life, traditionally a map of the divine emanation, is interpreted as a blueprint of the human psyche, detailing how consciousness descends into matter and ascends back to unity.
Unity of opposites: All three disciplines emphasize integrating opposing forces – conscious and unconscious, light and shadow, male and female, mercy and severity.
2. Alchemical stages and Psychological Processes:
Alchemical procedures are seen as metaphors for inner, emotional transformation.
- Nigredo (Blackness ): Represents the confrontation with the shadow, depression, and the breaking down of the ego, often the starting point of the therapy,
- Albedo (Whiteness): A stage of purification, insight and self-awareness where the psyche is illuminated.
- Rubedo (Redness): The final unification of opposites and the embodiment of the inner gold, or the realised self.
- Solve et Coagula ( Dissolve and coagulate ): The continuous process of breaking down limiting beliefs (dissolving) and rebuilding them into a more integrated personality (coagulating).
3. Kabbalistic contributions:
- Tikkun Olam (Repairing the world): Kabbalah provides the framework for this by suggesting that by refining the soul, one repairs both the self and the cosmos, a concept that matches the concept of psychological healing.
- Shevirat ha-kelim (Breaking of the vessels): Interpreted as a primordial psychological shattering that necessitates the egos journey to gather the lost divine sparks within the unconscious.
- The Four Worlds: Represents levels of consciousness , from the world of action (Assiah) to the divine world of emanation (Atziluth).
